It could be that people used to listen to radio for the music, not the DJ (I'm not talking about the 50s and 60s here). Now, if I want to listen to music, I can listen to my MP3 player (generically). If I listen to the radio and hear someone talking, that's no music, and I'm inclined to change the dial (well, whatever we want to call it these days).
I very much WANT my radio to be a jukebox - one that is programmed for me. Hearing someone talk up to the post isn't what I want. After all, you wouldn't talk over the last 3 minutes of Lela - why should you talk over the first 10 seconds of ANY song?
