It's still viable for things like
1. Feeding FM translators with programming.
2. Simulcasting internet streams to save on royalties.
3. Simulcasting AM signals for higher fidelity purposes, allows for the AM station to avoid using AM IBOC.
4. Making extra money (Leasing the space)
5. Moving programming when the main station flips format.
6. Providing programming unavailable elsewhere.
St. Louis has, IMO one of the most successful HD markets. There's sub channels doing some of the things above, but there's also more sub channels in use for different reasons. One of the more interesting ones is a College station in Illinois (just east of the river) that lets local High Schools use their HD-2 and HD-3 for their school's student run radio classes/programs.
