Weather radios provide important information during emergencies and today, the National Weather Service and local emergency management want to make sure you have one.
If you lose power or television service during a severe storm or other public emergency, a weather radio may be your only source of information.
"They are a core part of Dane County's warning system," says J. McLellan, Population Protection Planner for Dane County Emergency Management. "Yes, there are the outdoor warning sirens, but additionally, there are many other components involved in sending warning information and this is the most efficient and most effective way to transmit that information," says McLellan.
Weather radios can be programmed for a specific area and for specific warnings. For example, if you live in Monroe, you can program your radio to warn you only for Tornadoes and Severe Thunderstorms in Green County. It's a very important technology that is critical in a weather radio.
"Features people should be looking for when they purchase a weather radio include the ability to make it programmable by county, by location, by warning and additionally making sure that there's a battery backup," says McLellan.
Dane County is offering weather radios, at cost, for $25. They are sold in the Public Safety Building located at 115 West Doty St. room 2103 in Madison. Radios can also be purchased at various retail and discount stores.
