take to the Internet for airchecks of once-popular announcers.
Mark Pfeiffer has posted a collection of 50 airchecks, or audio files of tape recordings from old radio broadcasts, from Milwaukee radio in the 1980s, and from La Crosse and Madison, at www.mostlyuppermidwestairchecks.com. Pfeiffer, who lives in Corpus Christi, Texas, grew up in Madison and listened to Milwaukee radio on his Heathkit tuner with the rotor antenna. He taped all the airchecks on the site, except for a few that were posted by others on Youtube.
In an e-mail Pfeiffer said that the most sizable portion of his collection is from WLUM-FM in 1984-'87 and WKTI-FM 1982-'83, including the morning show co-hosted by Bob Reitman. Pfeiffer said he welcomes contributions from others.
Meanwhile, a Reitman aircheck from WQFM-FM in 1976 has surfaced on www.93qfm.blogspot.com.
It is a particularly interesting artifact. According to the commentary from Scott Beddome, who hosts the site, it is an aircheck from a show during which local legend Reitman set the record for longest continuous radio broadcast.
Finally, fans of Chicago radio host Steve Dahl can find airchecks of his old shows with Gary Meier on WLUM-AM at www.thestevervault.com.
