A memorial service is set for Tuesday for Martin Knudsvig of Waunakee, known to Madison-area radio listeners as Marty Kay, the longtime host of a talk show that was part professional advice, part rummage sale.
A lot of people grew up with Marty, said Tim Scott, Madison operations manager for Clear Channel Communications, which operates WIBA-AM, home to Knudsvigs At Your Service program for more than two decades.
His greatest strength was that he was so genuine, Scott said. A very likable guy.
Knudsvig performed a number of duties since joining the station in the mid-1980s, but he was best known for the Saturday morning broadcast, Scott said.
The show started at 7 a.m. with a garage sale hour in which Knudsvig broadcast phone calls from listeners offering items for sale, followed by four hours of answering callers questions with the on-air help of experts on gardening, vehicle repair and other topics, Scott said.
Knudsvig was 46 when he died on May 22 after suffering complications from a stroke.
He fell ill last summer, but recovered and came back in December to resume the show through May 1, Scott said.
When he came back, it was like the old Marty and everything was back, Scott said. Its a testament to his love and his will - his love for his listeners.
Family members have scheduled a memorial service from 4 to 8 p.m. at Lakeview Lutheran Church, 4001 Mandrake Road in Madison.
