Primarily responsible for news reporting from WPR�s west-central or southwest region and hosting weekly regional issues talk show. Position reports to WPR News Director and is responsive to regional manager of the bureau where the reporter is posted.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: 1. Prepare short and long-form news reports for local and statewide use, including: field reporting on issues and events appropriate for state coverage as assigned by WPR�s News Director; packaging material originated in regional studios for use statewide. Submit stories and scripts to assigned editor; make edits, produce and file scripts/stories in appropriate computer file. As appropriate, this reporter will also supply photos and other content for WPR�s news website, WPRNews.org (new site ready beginning late 2010 or early �11). Content will be based on the nature of the story, in consultation with News Director or designee. Reporter should also be familiar with multimedia reporting, including social networking sites, etc., and be able to consider ways to incorporate them into his or her work as appropriate. 2. Participate in daily local and WPR-network assignment meetings and conference calls, suggest strong ideas for statewide coverage; stay abreast of issues in assigned beat area. Maintain bureau archives through appropriate filing system, and/or databases. 3. Participate in news division, regional office, and statewide meetings when requested. Participate in team concept regarding programming, production and promotion of stations assigned through the regional office, and under the supervision of the Regional Manager. 4. In conjunction with the regional manager, produces and hosts an hour-long, issues-based weekly talk show on the regional Ideas Network station. Specific duties may include: Researching, pre-interviewing and scheduling guests; producing weekly on-air promos and providing information for news releases for each program; website updates, including preparing program for online download, and providing written descriptions for both downloadable past programs and promotion for future programs. 5. Participate in on-air fund raising or public appearances/special events as assigned. 6. Position includes occasional weekend and/or evening assignments and travel to cover regional and special assignments.
Qualifications and How to Apply: 1. Bachelor�s degree required. 2. Up to two or more years full time experience in broadcast journalism with strong on-air skills. 3. Superior oral and written communication skills, including web-based content development. 4. Research and analytical skills and persistence to recognize and assemble information of regional and/or statewide interest and topicality 5. Proven history/success in working independently and on meeting deadlines 6. Demonstrated interpersonal skills in a team setting and on an individual basis; collaboration skills that actively support a productive, respectful work environment. 7. Demonstrated technical mastery to operate a computer, control board, audio recorders and digital audio production software 8. Demonstrated understanding of public radio journalism and production values. 9. Ability to successfully work with diverse, multicultural people and groups. 10. Personal means of transportation required.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS � Previous public radio news experience. � Previous experience as a talk show or public affairs show host or moderator. � Experience with online news reporting or editing, including posting of audio, video, photography and text content. � Knowledge of web-based journalism projects, emerging technologies and applications. � Bachelor�s degree in journalism, communications or related field � Firm foundation in journalism ethics, news gathering and reporting techniques.
