Lucas will appear at Hall event

Mike Lucas, a longtime Madison media personality and radio color commentator for University of Wisconsin football and men’s basketball, will be the guest speaker at the Beloit Historical Society’s Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet on Aug. 4.
The event will be at 6 p.m. at the Lincoln Center, 845 Hackett St., in Beloit.
The five inductees are Katie Connelly, Bill Goetzke, Gene Winger, Chris Pearson and Jeff Stovall.
A native Beloiter who graduated from Beloit Memorial in 1968, Lucas then attended the University of Wisconsin, where he began covering Badger sports as a student journalist for the Badger Herald and Daily Cardinal.
He joined the Madison Capital Times in 1971 and twice was named Wisconsin Sportswriter of the Year.
Lucas has authored five books about UW athletics: “Barry’s Badgers: The Road to the Roses;” “Don’t Flinch — Barry Alvarez: The Autobiography,” “Bo Ryan: Another Hill to Climb;” “Five Golden Rings: The Saga of Wisconsin Hockey and “The 25 Greatest Moments in Camp Randall History.”
Tickets for the event are $25. A dinner will be served.
The Hall of Fame will also honor Beloit Memorial’s 1991 WIAA Division 1 State Track champions coached by Hall of Famer Gene Weeden.
The late Ron Splan, longtime Beloit College head softball coach, will be the recipient of the Everett C. Haskell/Bernie Barkin Lifetime Achievement Award.
