Hulsey hits radio waves with Spanish-speaking ad

The number of Spanish-speaking constituents in Assembly District 77 may be few, admits Rep. Brett Hulsey. But he’s nonetheless out with a new radio campaign ad to reach them.
The bilingual ad, “Yo trabajo para usted, I work for you,” began running Monday and will run through Monday, the day before the election, on Madison’s La Movida station, WLMV/AM 1480.
“I didn’t have to do it but I wanted to try it,” Hulsey says.
Hulsey, who is running against Green Party candidate Jonathan Dedering, estimates he has encountered about 20 Spanish-speaking voters while knocking on doors throughout the district. The district includes most of Madison west of Whitney Way.
He says they appreciate it when he can hold a conversation with them. Hulsey says he last took Spanish when he was a junior in high school, about 35 years ago.
Hulsey got some help from Rep. JoCasta Zamarippa, D-Milwaukee, and constituent Ruben Marquez.
But he says he and his family have traveled to Mexico and he keeps up using the language.
“I’ve been told my pronunciation is pretty good, but my accent needs work,” Hulsey says.
^^ This is the first time I can recall La Movida garnering any press beyond its initial launch.
