Sometimes I seek out local radio -- if there's something newsworthy happening locally, I'll check out WIBA-AM and WTDY. But I'm almost always disappointed to find little to no coverage of local breaking news, even at the top of the hour.
Other than that, the main times I listen to local radio are when I'm in the car driving around town (somehow, I'm too lazy to hook up my phone & play my own tunes, if I'm only driving around town). So I guess you could say the motivation is lack of alternatives. If I had SiriusXM in the car, I would probably listen to local radio a lot less.
Some of the local radio shows do pull me in -- if it's a slow news day and/or WPR is in pledge-drive mode, I enjoy listening to Jonathan & Kitty on WMMM on the drive into work. They're fun on their own, but have a lot of good local guests (former Mayor Dave, Rob Thomas, etc.). The Radio Deli on WMMM is also fun to listen to.
That said, due to the overabundance of commercials, and the overly conservative & repetitive playlist on the one station that's in my music wheelhouse (WMMM) I don't find myself motivated to listen to local radio as often as I once did, whether at home or work. I can't really listen to the radio at work, unless I listened online. And, to be honest, there are online stations I can listen to that are much better than what we have locally. Sorry to say.
