Great essay. I am late to this board, but am old but not retired.
Radio used to be local. I got my 1st class before I graduated HS and put myself through college being an engineer/DJ.
I miss small town local radio. People calling in asking for rides/stuff for sale/etc. this is what the old less hostile social media used to be. My biggest regret was (long story) being offered a chain of rural stations in the SE by the owner who believed as I did. I crunched the numbers and failed. A sat. Owner bought him out for millions a few years later.
