If true, I believe this will mark the beginning of the end for terrestrial radio. And the industry only has itself to blame. When all the industry does is "play more music", have announcers that can only say "that was.. and here is..on the station with the most music", or the same generic talk programing..what do we expect to happen? As for the public safety..weather service is launching new app for smart phone that will give weather warnings faster than the automated, unattended station with the malfunctioning EAS unit ever would.
Great example is school closings...remember when we all listened to the radio for them...then some bright PD came up with idea that announcing that every 10 minutes was bad because it "disrupted the flow of the music". Now TV has the closings on the bottom of the screen and schools send alerts right to smart phones...radio most of time doesnt even get called! I bet even the stations that are announcing school closings are getting them off the internet from local tv!
Has anyone else noticed that as the more radio takes local programing out of the morning show, the tv stations are adding more early morning local news and starting as early as 4:30? And radio continues to add syndicated national morning shows...
I believe that without local, compelling programing WHY would ANYONE listen to a radio station when they can get the music and information they want via internet or smart phone?
