The Sportsradio Doubleplay has been gone since at least 2000. The only purpose 1550 had was to fill in the areas that 1510 didn't cover in Kenosha County.
Over the years, they've had some power increases (1510 now covers Kenosha) in addition to covering the entire market on 540. They sold it to Relevant Radio in 2001.
Back in '09 or so, Relevant Radio sold it to one of their former board members, Mark Follet, who is the guy behind WOVM, and the Timeless Cool Network. He also up until recently owned 950 WNTD in Chicago which just sold to Relevant (they were leasing the entire air schedule) for a pretty healthy amount of cash.
1550 had a CP to move the city of license to Northbrook, with a tower site in Highland Park. Highland Park is a very rich uppity area, and they had trouble getting the tower constructed. They were looking for options, so they filed a silent STA while they continued to figure out how to get the Northbrook CP constructed.
They ran out of time. The CP expired in November. They had til January 10th on their silent STA to return to the air. They returned 2 days early with the same programming the station offered prior to going silent.
It will either be sold, kept on the air from Lake Geneva with a different business model, a CP re attempt, or the license will be turned into the FCC. Hopefully one of the first 3 will be the case.
