WLIP does not have a short broadcasting range at all. It gets out really well for 250 watts.
It can be heard well in Milwaukee. I've heard it on the shore of Lake Michigan in downtown Chicago. I've heard reports of it being heard in Port Washington, and halfway to Madison.
The Wake Up Call began in 2005 when the station flipped to Oldies. Bill Lawrence traded places with Paul Kern, who went to mornings at WRJN while Bill moved to mornings on WLIP. He's been there ever since. He was there in the 90s as well.
Peter Serzant (I believe he is one of the co-hosts of Lip Off) did the "Weekend Wakeup Call" on Saturday mornings, which was basically music programming before the typical Saturday morning talk they ran at the time. We're talking 10 years ago.
A lot of what's on there is brokered I believe. Not all of it. Remembering Kenosha (Lou Rugani in general) Lenny Palmer, The Wake-Up Call are all local staples of the station.
I believe Happenings Q&A pays for their airtime. I don't think it's 100% live. Some of it might be recorded. Happenings Magazine is a local publication. They might barter.
Nights are filled with a few syndicated shows, Jim Bohannon, Overnight America.
Saturdays, I'm not certain about all of it, but I know there's some paid programming there. The Radio Rummage Sale (Tradio) was a feature they had in the 90s which returned when they went back into the talk direction back in 2007.
I believe The Doo-Wop Diner, and Jukebox Saturday Night is paid programming. CopyCat Music in Racine programs and pays for that I believe. Dr. Destruction (Who is a local horror host on cable access, a popular public figure in the area) used to have a show on there called "The Big Top Radio Show", which I believe he was paying somewhere around $400 an hour or something for the airtime.
Another cable access (Channel 14) Scott Barter hosts a show on there during the weekends. Not sure if he pays for that or not.
Terry Havel has a great Oldies show on Saturday afternoons. It's long running, I believe it began back in 2005 as well.
Saturdays they have the 20+ year old (I think it started in 1992) Music Of The Stars with Lou Rugani, which features some really interesting content. It used to air earlier in the morning, then it moved to later in the morning, early afternoon. Now they run it during both shifts.
The rest of the weekend schedule is for the most part automated 60s-70s Oldies "Good Time Rock 'N Roll" which is a locally programmed holdover from their 2005-2007 Oldies format (They ran the now defunct ABC Oldies Radio)
They have a rotating sports show there weeknights as well as far as I know.
Honestly, I haven't listened since Irene Buri-Nelson passed away. The station really has not been the same without her. Prior to that, I was a heavy listener from 1995 or so, I was about 8 years old when I first heard Steve Fifer (Sparky on WSSP) playing Oldies on there, along with Brewers Games, Art Bell, AP Network News, and the Radio Rummage Sale. "Kenosha's News Radio" they called it at the time. It flipped to Adult Standards (Westwood One) a year later.
