IMO the responses you have gotten so far Dan are crap. They are from people scared of their own jobs or people who have lost their own jobs in radio, and they are scared of people like you. The younger more cheap employee that took or can take their jobs. There is still room to break into radio especially in the smaller markets like Eau Claire, Green Bay/Appleton, La Crosse and even Madison and Milwaukee if you find the right PD and you click with them. The advice I can give you is to be persistent but pleasant. Get the attention of the PD by doing what no one else does these days - send an email, make a call, and follow up with a handwritten note in the mail. If you aren't getting anywhere, take it to the next level. Send some flowers or a small gift. I once sent a pizza and had them write FROM DAVE WHO WANTS TO WORK HERE 608-xxx-xxxx on the inside top of the pizza box. Be willing to start at the bottom of the totem pole. Offer to work promotions or as an unpaid intern doing whatever they can give you around the station. Wash the vans, take the vans to get gas, pick up lunch, hang out at remotes and help out. These are all opportunities to bond with the Promotions Director, on air talent, and other paid staff members who can take a liking to you. That's what you want, you want your "in" and you can grow from there. Not everyone is bitter and jaded like some of the people on this board. Good luck. Come back and post here in a few months to let us know how you're doing. And thanks for having a passion for radio. We need young people with passion like you, who can bring radio into the next generation.
