Question for an engineer

Yesterday afternoon while it was raining hard I was flipping between several Milwaukee AM stations (620, 1130, 1290, 920, 1250, others) and they were all seeming to be impacted by the weather. The signals were fading in and out, and had static. What causes this to happen during bad weather?
